I love the awards season: the gorgeous celebrities parading the rep carpet, the fabulous designer frocks and the banging beauty looks. What’s not to love?!
The 2016 awards season kicked off with a bang this month with the Golden Globes event. While much has been said about Ricky Gervais’ bold punchlines, the reality is that I am slightly more interested in the bold poutlines on the celebrities.
Many celebrities donned breathtaking looks for the event, so it was not an easy task to pick only a few favourites. Below are my standouts from the night.
Berry and burgundy shades featured prominently this year – both in a complimentary fashion, as well as contrasting pop of colour. With a nod to the fall/winter season, these starlettes opted for the very on-trend red wine colour palette, wearing it in a variety of ways.
The actress matched the detailing of her dress with matte berry lips. Her glowing skin and simple eyeshadow ensured her bold pout was the focus of the look.
Olivia Wilde also opted for a complimentary shade of cranberry, but instead as an eyeshadow. The blown out burgundy smokey eye is anchored by a rim of black eyeliner – very bold, yet beautifully executed.
Laverne Cox rocked a top heavy liner with bold lashes and a gorgeous deep plum lip. The makeup was striking against her white gown and balanced the overall look.
The queen of glow bucked the trend of complimentary burgundy shades and opted to use the red-wine lip to stand out over her gorgeous mustard yellow gown. An off-shade of yellow is difficult to compliment, and J-Lo did a brilliant job with her makeup so that it didn’t clash, but stood out against her loud dress. She can do no wrong!
Old Hollywood Glam
A common theme to just about every Hollywood awards show is a handful of stars opting for the “Old Hollywood” look. Big, bounding curls, with dramatic eyeliner and lashes. It’s a staple on every red carpet.
Compared to the old Lady Gaga known for her outrages costumes, including when she arrived to an awards show in an egg that was stretchered in, this woman was hardly recognisable. Gaga channeled Marilyn Monroe to a T with coiffed curls, major lashes and the signature bombshell neckline. It suited her to perfection.
Similar to Lady Gaga, Katy Perry is not usually one to shy away from wearing a bold costume. For the Golden Globes, she also opted for the more retro glam look, with a beehive inspired do and middle-part fringe. She kept her makeup simple with a thick dose of black eyeliner across the top lid and a blush pink lipstick to compliment her musk-pink toned gown.
Known for her signature brown smokey eye, Olivia also bucked the trend and opted for a more classic look. Her beautiful brown eyes stood out with some pink shimmery eyeshadow on the lid and a mauve-brown in the crease to soften it out. A thick winged liner was a nod to the classics, and she matched it with a gorgeous fuschia lip.
Perhaps my favourite look to see on the red carpet is a sexy smokey eyes (surprised?!). I mean really, when else is it more socially acceptable to rock the most sexy of smokey eyes than at a Hollywood award show?! A number of celebrities did it beautifully too.
Lily opted for a smudgy, slept-in smokey eye which offset her flowing white gown to perfection. Her messy waves and long bob made her look feel modern and undone against the formality of her dress.
Zendaya swept through the red carpet with an ultra bombshell look. Her flawless skin was complimented with a soft gold smokey eye and lashings of lashes; it made her brown eyes look piercing. Her brows were also groomed to perfection: 10/10.
Unsurprisingly, it-girl of the moment Kylie Jenner killed it with this cool-toned blown out cat wing brown smokey eye that has every YouTube guru rushing to recreate this look. With her signature nude pout, Kylie amped up the glam on the eyes but left the liner at home, opting for luscious lashes instead. Her top knot kept the look youthful and made her face the star of the show.
A red-carpet veteren, Kirsten Dunst knows what looks suit her on a red carpet. Wearing a stunning black velvet gown, Kirsten went bold with a black and grey smokey eye which framed her blue eyes perfectly. Knowing better than to go too nude on the lips, Kirsten opted for a rose-pink lip stick and matching blush to bring life to her face. Bravo, Kirsten!
Glowing and Fresh-Faced
One of the more popular options was fresh, flawless skin with simple definition on the eyes and a flattering choice of lip colour. When done by some of the best makeup artists in the world, this style lets the gown be the star of the show, and ensures the makeup brings out the best features and does not overpower the look.
Cate wore a gorgeous fringed gown that was complimented with khol-rimmed eyes and a baby pink lipstick.
The gorgeous Rosie looked like a vision in her gold sequin gown, and wore a subtle gold shimmer eyeshadow to tie the look in together. Her face was bronzed and fresh with a very natural lip colour dabbed on the lips with a gloss applied.
With the wonderful Lisa Eldridge behind the brushes of this look, it is unsurprising that Kate’s skin is flawless and fresh with a simple bit of definition around the eyes. Kate epitomises the ultimately English Rose with her fair skin, and the mauve-pink colours on the lips and cheek compliment this look perfectly.
Very much her signature look, Kate is known for having enviable glowing skin. A sheer wash of shimmer eyeshadow brings some added glow to the look.
Flattering her gorgeous full red pout, Rachael kept her look simple and focused on the skin. The true-red lipstick really brings out her eyes; well played, Rachael!
And that rounds up the highlights (zing!) from the Golden Globes – I hope you enjoyed. Let me know who caught your eye on the night!
